I went on a 2 day overnight tuna fishing trip on the Big Jamaica from North Jersey. Caught this beauty at approximately 9 PM on a jig. It was a nice 210 LB Bigeye.

Tilefish Trip on June 10, 2015

Seas were a little choppy on the way out to the Tilefishing grounds. We started fishing at approx. 6:30 AM and the waves died down. The weather for the remainder of the trip yielded minimal wave height, making for excellent conditions to catch giant Goldens.

We started fishing in deep water ranging from 600 to 1,100 feet in order to target giants. Gennaro Destefano from Queens, NY hooked up a nice 38 lb Golden Tile early in the day. It was the first fish caught on the boat and he would later win the 1st place pool. Congratulations! Nice fish. A little later, Joe caught a 2nd place pool winning Golden Tile weighing in at approx. 30 lbs. This was a nice fish as well.

The bite was steady for the remainder of the trip with more nice sized Goldens up to 25 lbs. Later in the day after 12:00 noon, we moved to shallower water to get some Blueline Tiles. Eder Hernandez from Queens, NY caught a 3rd place pool winning Blueline during this time.

Overall, the fishing was excellent with a steady bite from giant Goldens and good sized Bluelines. The weather was great as well with flat, calm waters. Thanks for checking in and happy fishing! Now, on to the photos...

Sea Bass & Gray Tilefish Trip - January 11, 2013

Before departure from the docks, we were struck with an unusually low tide. As a result, the boat was not able to leave the inlet, and it delayed our departure by approximately 2 hours. Despite this delay, the captain moved out at a faster speed and we were able to begin fishing at the normal time.

We tried for Sea Bass during the morning hours. Within the first hour of fishing, they were biting the Lucanus Jigs hard. Many people had a dozen or more of nice sized Sea Bass within this hour. On the contrary, the dogfish were biting anything with bait, including baited diamond jigs. The dogfish were plentiful here and the captain made numerous moves to try to stray away from them with little luck. The dogfish would hound us for the remainder of the trip.

During the PM hours, we moved to a Tilefish ground anticipating good fishing action. The first few drops managed to catch... dogfish. What a surprise! Even though we moved about an hour away from the Sea Bass area, the dogfish were here as well. The start of Tilefishing was slow but towards the last hour or so, the fishing significantly picked up. The pool winning Tile was caught during this last hour. Many others caught nice sized Tilefish with some double headers as well.

Sea Bass & Gray Tilefish Trip - January 3, 2013

We welcomed the New Year 2013 with a successful Sea Bass and Gray Tilefish Trip!!!

Mike rigged a Monster Skirt on this Lucanus Jig, and it worked extremely will with the Sea Bass.

The first trip of the year yielded minimal wave height, but steady and extremely cold winds persisted. These winds lasted the entirety of the trip. Anglers were bundled up with gloves, hats, and multiple sweaters, jackets, thermals, etc.

The first stop was a well known Tilefishing ground. Despite the popularity and past success at this spot, the Tilefish were unusually slow to bite. Anglers caught few Golden and Gray Tilefish. The next spot was a rocky bottom Sea Bass ground. There were many large Sea Bass with Bluefish as well. Anglers caught many nice sized Sea Bass on both jigs and bait. The Lucanus Jigs were very successful. Mike reports that the Lucanus Jig with a Monster Skirt instead of the standard Lucanus skirt did wonders with the Sea Bass. There were many coolers full of Sea Bass and some Tilefish as well.

Tilefish Trip - December 14, 2012

Temperatures were a bit on the chilly side, but sunlight was plentiful all day. The water current was suitable for good Tilefishing. Although the overall sizes of the fish were smaller, the Tilefish bite was steady throughout the entirety of the trip, and it kept anglers busy all day. Mike Jung put on a great performance with 25 fish, weighing a total of approx. 150 lbs. Other anglers had an average of a little over 20 fish.

Tilefish Trip - December 4, 2012

During the morning hours, we went to deeper fishing grounds in search of big Tilefish. The weather was OK, and it made for good Tilefishing conditions. During the AM portion of the trip, Robin was able to hook and land a nice 40 lb-er and Brad was also able to catch a nice 25 lb Tilefish. Robin later explained that it was his first giant Tilefish and that it was an experience of a lifetime. He explained the fight to be nothing but dead weight for the first 5 mins. The fish followed up with a reluctant and slow way up to the surface, with the occassional jerking motion. He stated that it was like trying to drag a rebellious kid out of a candy store!! He was full of smiles for the remainder of the trip.

After about an hour, the winds significantly picked up and fishing became very difficult. Anglers had to increase their sinker weight to 3 lbs. Some anglers even taped up multiple sinkers to make improvised 5 and 6 lb-ers. Holding bottom was still a challenging task with the winds as strong as it was. In light of these windy conditions, the captain decided to move to shallower waters. The rest of the trip gave a steady Tilefish bite with overall smaller sizes of Golden and Blueline Tiles. Anglers caught an average of 12 fish.

Tilefish Trip - November 26, 2012

The weather was a little chilly but it was sunny all day. It was beautiful weather for fishing. On the contrary, the Tilefish were slow to bite, and fishing action was moderate at most. It seems that the after effects of Hurricane Sandy still have a significant and adverse presence among the Tilefish population and other species of fish. Anglers caught an average of 10-15 fish. Jin Kim from Edison, NJ landed an impressive 25 fish, taking home the high hook title. Most of the anglers were using my new Tilefish jigs, including high hook Jin Kim.

High Hook Jin Kim's cooler full of Tilefish!

Nice double header
