We went Sea Bass Charter Trip by Atlantic Star in Cape May. We had a lot of fun catching very good sized Sea Bass. The size were 3-7 lb, but I caught 7 1/2 lb which is my personal record.

Bluefin Tuna Fishing Report – Tuesday, November 8, 2011

We went on a bluefin tuna fishing trip on November 8, 2011, travelling out of Hyannis, MA. We left the docks at 3 AM and we got to the fishing grounds at 6 AM. Within about 10 minutes from the first drop, my son was hooked on a tuna. We landed it in approx. 20 mins. and it turned out to be a nice 100 pounder, measuring about 47 inches. About an hour after the first catch, my son was hooked on a second tuna, but it was snagged on the side. This one was about 49 inches. My son was hot on this day!! Those 2 tunas turned out to be the only keepers on this trip, as the others did not meet the size regulations. However, we did hook on 4 more undersized tunas; 2 were on jigs, one each by me and Eric. The other 2 were on bait. We also had a good amount of cod, with Albert being the cod master! Overall, it was an amazing trip and beautiful weather. To make things even more exciting, we hooked on a whale at one point. The buzzing noise coming from the reel on the bait setup was so loud and powerful. It made everyone jump thinking it was a huge tuna!!

Bluefin Tuna Fishing Report - Sunday, November 6, 2011

We went bluefin tuna fishing on Sunday, November 6, 2011, travelling out of Hyannis, MA. We left the dock at approx. 2:30 AM, and we arrived at the fishing ground at 6 AM. We wanted to start the day off with some cod, so we dropped our jigs to the bottom. After about 1.5 hours, we landed approx. 40 cod weighing an average of 10 to 18 lbs. Needless to say, the cod fishing was terrific! The main equipment used was the Monster Jig. Also, while cod jigging, I hooked a nice 350 lbs. Mako Shark which I landed in about 40 mins. I was using the Monster Jig with a pink silicone skirt and glow B2 squid.

After a good amount of cod and Mako Shark action early on, we wanted to target what we came for, the bluefin tunas. At approx. 1 PM, I hooked on to a tuna. I fought it and got it about 10 to 15 feet below the surface. We were able to see the tuna and estimated it to be in the 120 to 150 lbs class. We were all excited but danger followed shortly afterwards. As the crew were getting the gaff and the harpoon ready, the line suddenly snapped and the rod went limp. We saw the bluish white shadow swim away. It felt as if the tuna was teasing us as it made its escape. After this disappointment, my son struck again! He hooked onto something but couldn't tell what it was at first. He stated that it felt like a dogfish. After about 20 reel turns, the line went taut and the fish charged out like rockets blasting. After only about 3-5 seconds, the line snapped again.

At this point, I was certain that the prime time for tuna had passed. Everyone on the boat agreed with this statement. With that, the captain decided to return home. We were about 10 mins on the way back when Nick, one of the fishermen on the trip, spotted heavy bird and whale activity off in the distance. We promptly stopped near this area and began tuna jigging. After about 10 mins of jigging, my son hooked on. We fought this fish for about 20 mins and it was another Mako Shark about the same size as the first one.

Overall, this trip was good. We didn't get any tuna but we still got 2 nice sized Mako Shark and many cod, which is better than nothing!!

Bluefin Tuna Fishing Report – Monday, October 24, 2011

We went on a bluefin tuna fishing trip aboard the “On Time” with Capt. Jim. It was a beautiful day with very calm seas and minimal winds. The day started out with my son, Robin, jigging too close to the bottom and hooking a couple of dogfish. At approximately 9 AM, Robin called out that he had something hooked. At first, he stated that he didn’t think it was a tuna because it was coming up easily. After about 15 turns on his reel, the fish charged out about 100 yards. At this point, everyone on the boat yelled that it was a big tuna. My son and I took turns fighting this fish. We landed it in approximately 25 minutes, due to the line wrapping around the tunas tail and rendering it useless for the last leg of the fight. As soon as the fish breached the surface, I yelled for the gaff and we were able to harpoon it and bring it into the boat. The bluefin tuna was an absolute beauty, measuring an impressive 79 inches and weighing approx 340 lbs. This tuna was caught on a pink Metallic Sardine jig. My record for biggest tuna on a jig has been 77 inches up until now. My son has beaten this record by 2 inches and I am very proud of him. Congratulations Robin!!

After landing the first tuna, we continued to jig and we also put some bait fishing rigs in the water. At approx 10 AM, another tuna hit one of the bait fishing rods. This was a classic tuna fight. We would take back about 10 feet of line and fish would charge out about 10 yards. We continue this for about an hour and a half. Afterwards, we were finally able to bring it to the surface where Jim harpooned it. We all sighed in relief after this long and hard fight, but then danger!!! The harpoon slipped out of the flesh of the tuna and the fish went back down to about 60 feet. I stopped it and reeled it back in. Luckily, it wasn’t putting much of a fight this time around. I brought it back up easily and Jim harpooned it again and this time it was a firm hold. This bluefin tuna turned out to be another big one, measuring 74 inches.

Overall, it was a great trip and some records were topped as well. We couldn’t ask for anything better. Great weather and lots of fish!! We all came home with smiles on our faces. I guess this trip makes up for all the times we came home empty handed.

We went Trip By Atlantic Star at Wildwood Crest, N.J.

In the morning, it was little windy and some cloud. After 10AM, weather got better and action also got better. We had about 50 golden tile fish and about 100 gray tile fish total. Sambong Park from N.J. had high hook and also won the pool. He had 8 golden tiles weight about 40 lbs, and 5 gray tiles. There were 19 people who took part in this trip.

I went on a Fluke fishing trip on May 9, 2011 aboard the fishing boat "Miss Montauk". During this trip, I tested out my new fluke jig, and it turned out to be a great success. In total, I caught 7 keepers of which 5 were 5.5 to 8.5 pounds. In accordance with regulations, I kept only 3 of the fish. The "Miss Montauk" crew were surprised with the results. I took many pictures but they were lost due to technical difficulties with my digital camera.

Jigging Tip - Finding Right Jigs

When I go fishing, I usually bring around 2 dozen different jigs and for every 3-4 casts, try different jigs until I find good one. After then I keep use it until no bite is happening. A lot of customers and friends ask me that which one is good jig? Well, I don't really have good answer. When we are out fishing, condition of fishing is all different every time. I have to find what they like at the moment, and when I find a good jig, then every casts going to hook fish. It is really a lot of fun.

Usually, people trust too much of their experience and their equipment, but while you have 100 years of experience and million dollar equipments, you can't find what fish like then you can't catch any fish.

The sea condition was unusually strong current that made the trip wasn't easy. Another problem was we were getting so many jumbo sea bass hits on the baits, so catching tile fish was easy.

Anyhow, we had nice tile fishes for each and everyone. There were some dog fish, but that didn't bother too much, rather too many sea bass.

We will be going out for sea bass trip sometime in the middle of March with special permit. If anyone is interested, then call Mike or email.

Cod Fishing Report - Jan 31st, 2011

I went Cod fishing with “Helen H” at Montauk. It was a little slow day, so I started to try almost all of my jigs. Finally, there was one good jig actually working. The jig is Sea Gator 6 3/4oz. It was hard to believe that it seemed no fish were down there and there were like none caught any on the boat. Using Sea Gator jig, every casts hooked the fish and they were all good keepers 23~25”.

For an hour, I caught a dozen of nice size fishes, and then my party was over… I tried few other jigs, and Hammered Diamond 4 oz hooked few more keepers.

I used only one jig at a time with no teaser. When fish is there but it’s not biting, one small jig works.

If you want to try Sea Gator jigs, then do Yo-Yo jigging. It’s not for squidding.

Last Monday January 17^th, 2011, I went cod fishing with Francis Fleet at R.I. The day was freezing, but still many came about 50 people. Fishing was little slow that most of people kept 3-6 fishes. For me, I caught 19 keepers, but took only 2 which one of them was 15 LB pool fish. Gears that I used were small jigs around 4-7 oz. with Lucanus Skirts attached as in the picture. I casted and did slow squidding. Smaller jigs seemed working better that had more hits, and I had more and bigger sized fishes. If anyone wants to try the jigs, then ask me by email, or by phone. We don’t have those set made for set but I can help if someone needs. These Lucanus skirts is very good for cod squidding, since it is made for slow squidding.

Last Thursday, January 6th, 2011, I went Cod fishing with Francis Fleet in Point Judith, R.I. The weather was little chilly, but weather was nice. There were a lot of fish actions. Jigging worked better than the bait as 3 to 1. Smaller jigs of 5~8 oz. with pink or orange plastic octopus or grup was working well. For me I used only 1 jig with no teaser, and I did slow squiding technique which worked out pretty well.

Below jigs are for Tuna jigs but also works good with Cods.

Sea Bass Trip - December 31st, 2010

*Gary Schwartz from New Jersery, came for the first time sea bass jigging. He used Lucanus Jigs for about two hours and caught about a dozen of nice sea bass.

We went to Sea Bass Trip with Atlanic Star at Wild Wood, NJ. Weather condition was very unusual for the day. A lot of big sea bass was on rocky open bottom, but Lucanus jigs worked very well. Many people used Lucanus jigs for whole time, and limiting out wasn’t a problem and mostly fishes were big. We had 7~18 nice sea bass and few cods.

We went to Sea Bass Trip with Atlanic Star at Wild Wood, NJ. The weather condition wasn’t great as expected, that we changed course to Sea Bass only trip instead combo trip with Tile fish. We left at 2 AM Friday; it was windy and seemed 4-6 feet sea all day.

We started about 200 feet rocky bottom. There were so many sea bass size over 5 lb. and many happy fishermen limited out for good sized fishes. The pool winner was 8.2 lb. Brad Warren from Philadelphia, PA., and the 2nd place was 7 2/1 lb. Dennis Muhlenforth from DE. The trip was great for jigging and overall the trip was very successful even though the weather was little rough.

Canyon Tuna Trips - 10/18/2010 & 11/1/2010

I went canyon tuna trips by Big Jamaica on 10/18 and 11/1. For each trip, I caught 3 yellow fin tuna for my limit and few long fin tuna. It looked like a lot better than last 2 years. Chilly November weather is perfect for tuna jigging. Big Jamaica has more tuna trip and I will be trying few more time before the season is over.

-Adding a squid or octopus on a tuna metal jig.

This method produces 2 to 3 times more tuna bites. Squid or octopus color should be decided depending on the condition, but usually like bottom fish jigs, usual colors work well as Pink, Orange, Green or Glow. I accidently found this and I've been testing for over 10 tuna trips.

We had another very very good trip. It took only 45 minute to the boat ride which was very close spot. After we started fishing it was almost non stop action and mostly all big fish ranged from 30 LB. to 40 LB. Fishes were everywhere. We had 10 hours charter trip, but we returned to the dock at about 12 noon, because everyone had limit with big fishes. It was great trip that I am very happy to share about it.

My wife and I had a open boat trip to Frances Fleet , R.I. It was nice day. There were about 30 people on the board. My wife, Young won the pool with a 7 LB. nice big Fluke and we both had limit out on 12 Fluke. They were weighted between 3 1/2 to 7 LBS. Also we had 1 Sea bass.

We used SPRO's Prime Bucktail 3/8 oz. Bunker color and SPRO's Mudkicker 3/8 oz. Crab color, that those two worked best for the flukes!

Last Friday May 7th, 2010, Another good trip for Golden Tile Fish trip by Atlantic Star. The weather was very nice over 80 degrees temperature. 51 LB. beautiful golden tile fish caught by Kevin C. Feaster from P.A., won the pool. We caught about 60 Golden Tiles and about 120 nice Rose fishes.

Whole day, I tried jigging with Shimano Lucanus Jig. I think I was the first Golden Tile Fish catch by Lucanus Jig. I caught three Golden Tile fishes, 7 Blue fishes, and 10 geed sized Rose fishes all by Shimano Lucanus Jig.

A lot of people worry about using expensive jig (like Lucanus jig) that if they loose it by bed bottom? Over a year past, I used more than 20 full days using only Lucanus Jig, but I’ve never lost any by the bottom, because we use it different way.

By 11 a.m. we had 12 tunas on jig. Almost everybody was tired fighting big tuna. After 11:30, we moved to bottom fish spot and I caught one 45 lb. Red Drum by Lucanus jig from Shimano. The sea was so calm and warm. Oh, it was beautiful Spring day like every one's DREAM.

Tuna Fishing Report - March 1, 2010

On March 1 Monday, at about 4 am, we got to Hatteras Island, when winded so much like over 30 knots. But as soon as we were out in Ocean, the condition wasn’t that bad. There were some waves, but for the size of the boat it was okay

After we started jigging for about 15 minutes, Carlos FISHED ON! After 1 hour, we saw color. It looked like less than 200 LBS, but it was so strong. So many times we saw that, but it was not closer than 10 feet.

Around just before 9 A.M., Captain said a lot of tuna around here! After then we started casting jigs. After few seconds, three tunas were on! Every tuna ran to different direction. After about 15 minutes, first tuna was deck, and after few minutes, another tuna was on! Two fishes had to go since they didn't have any more line. Still we had two fishes on.

We were trying to tag, but everyone fight with tuna over one hour. We had to tight more drag and break line, so we can move to tile fish spot. 600 feet water with full moon tide was not easy to hold bottom. We caught 10 gray tile fish and one 170 lb. blue fin tuna.

We tried little different way for tuna jig. Before we used tuna jig with plain hook, but today we used Metallic Sardine and Stainless jig plus one piece of pink plastic octopus on the hook. You can see picture above.

We embarked on our first cod fishing trip for this winter season. The fishing conditions were fluctuating all day. The beginning of the trip was very exciting as we were able to reel in double headers at almost every drop. We caught so many golden colored cod, and we kept only keeper sizes which were about 22"-24". Before 10 AM, my cooler was full of cod.

The first hour was eventful, but in the second hour the action had slowed down. At about 10 AM, I changed my 10 oz. stainless jig and cast away. My jig dropped around 100 feet then something hit it hard. The moment I hooked this fish, I knew that it was a huge tuna. After 15 minutes, it was only 30-40 feet underwater. I was able to see a white body circling around. It was a very exciting fight, and it turned out to be a 100 lb. blue fin tuna. Shortly afterwards, I was able to hook another tuna, but it dropped. The stainless jig worked very well during this trip.

I would like to make one note about our stainless jig. We made our stainless jig last March. Last May, in Hampton, NH, I went out on a party boat Al Gauron, and I had two big cod weighing in at 41 lbs and 45 lbs using the stainless jig. Again, during this trip, I was able to hook a good sized blue fin tuna. This proves that jig works extremely well for tuna and cod. I will continue experimenting to see what other fish favor this jig.

Blue Fin Tuna - Fishing Report – November 5, 2009

Fishing Grounds: In vicinity of Province Town in Cape Cod

Weather: Few clouds, calm waters

We were looking for bird, whale, and any type of fish activity on the waters surface. We saw some activity, but there were too many dogfish in the area. Around 9 AM, Nick hooked one tuna using a Green Metallic Sardine, but it snapped after approximately two minutes.

We moved about 7 to 8 miles to the east, where we found a couple dozen whales and a few birds. This time, Bernardo hooked one tuna using an 8 oz. Green Knife Jig. I saw the fish bounce and shake its head. It was big tuna that swam away taking about 40-50 yards of line before breaking off. To everyone's disappointment, he lost the fish. Then miraculously, I was able to hook one, but after just a short 20 seconds I lost it. For the next ten minutes, I hooked four fish but dropped all of them. I checked my Gamakatsu 4x Strong Hook to find that it was still very sharp.

Up until 10 AM, we already dropped 8-9 fish, but everyone was still determined to return home with a prize. We continually cast our lines hoping to catch something big. After I cast just over a whale, I hooked something immediately. At first, I thought it could be the whale but it shook its head violently. This was a key indicator that it was, in fact, a tuna. I fought with it for nearly one hour. It turned out to be a beautiful 68" fish.

Afterwards, I cast again with my Green Metallic Sardine pointing towards the whale. It went down about 30 feet and I felt something abruptly tug at my jig. I rocked my rod and hooked another tuna. Unfortunately, it turned out to be smaller than we expected, as we were looking for a fish over 73". All of the tuna that we landed were about 68-69", so we kept the first one and released the rest. It was another wonderful trip, and the tuna loved the green colored jigs. The Metallic Sardine was the ticket!

Blue Fin Tuna - Fishing Report – October 21, 2009

Again, we went to Cape Cod at Green Harbor, MA with Captain Jim’s “On Time”. The weather was great, but this kind of weather makes fish lazy sometimes. There was a lot of fish activity early in the morning, but later on it started to calm down. Anyhow we caught one blue fin that weighed about 170 lbs. It was a great trip again. It was another successful trip in Green Harbor, MA with Capt. Jim's "On Time". We caught one 68” using a live whiting, and another one which was almost the same size, but we let it go. The third one we hooked with a green 7 oz. metallic sardine. After only a few minutes of a tough fight, the leader snapped and we lost it. We returned a little early because there was a storm coming, but the overall condition out at sea was good, and we saw many whales jumping.

Once again, we went on a blue fin tuna trip to the same place in Plymouth, MA with Capt. Jim's "On Time". We had 12-15 mph winds out at sea, but the weather was still beautiful. Upon arrival to our first spot, we anchored down with a bunch of other boats. We used live bunker for bait.

I used my rig with a green flash. As I dropped my rig down about 20 feet into the water, a huge tuna jumped right in front of me, and bolted away in a straight line for about 200 yards. After a few seconds, the line snapped. It must have been a huge and tough one.

I tried again using the same equipment. After a few minutes, I hooked another, and at the same time, a second angler hooked one as well. The latter tuna was presumed to weigh only about 120 lbs, so we let it go. Instead, we decided to keep the tuna that I caught, as it weighed 170 lbs. It was a long and cumbersome fight, taking about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

After this successful catch, we moved on to a cod fishing area, where we caught 30 cod (weighing up to 30 lbs), 15 haddock, and a bunch of casks.

We returned a little early after a day of good fishing.

Blue Fin Tuna - Fishing Report – September 15, 2009

We went out blue fine tuna fishing with Capt. Jim's "On Time" from Plymouth, MA. It was a warm and calm day. We saw a lot of bait, but we didn't see any bird activity. The fish activity near the top of the water was minimal. All of us tried jigging all day. No tuna was hooked, but we did catch 8 good sized striped bass between 20-30 lbs, some dog fish, and big blue fish.

Afterward, we tried using live bunker for bait. This proved to be successful as we were able to catch one big blue fin tuna, using spinning tackle. It was so hard to bring the fish in, and it took about 2 hours. Initially, I thought it was over 300 lbs, but the fish was hooked barely which was why it took so long.

Blue Fin Tuna - Fishing Report – September 2, 2009

We went jigging & popping looking for giant blue fin tuna at Cape Cod Bay, MA. We heard some reports that there were good fishing here on Monday & Tuesday, but when we were there on Wednesday, sea condition wasn’t good, so not much of tuna activity. Anyhow, we caught 1 blue fin at about 180 lb.

Golden Tile Fish - Fishing Report – May 21, 2009

We went to another golden tile fish trip to same place with Atlantic Star, in Cape May, NJ on May 21. It was very successful trip again that we had about 40 golden tile fish and many were huge. I caught 51lb golden tile and won the pool, while Nino did second with 50 1/4lb golden tile. Dennis was high hook catching 5 golden tile fish. There were about 15 golden tile fishes weighted over 40lb.

We are planning next trip on June 4^th same place.

Golden Tile Fish Tournament! - Fishing Report – May 13, 2009

To celebrate our 22^nd anniversary of our store Peace Token Fishing Tackle, we opened golden tile fish tournament. It was one of lifetime experience trip that there was many huge golden tiles we caught. The winner Dwayne Sherard’s tile fish was now pending for tie for world record as 59 lbs and 3.2oz.

We arrived at first fishing ground after about seven hours where some grey tiles live. After short stay we went on and started fishing golden tiles.

To tell result, there were about 4 fishes over 50lbs and 20 fishes over 40 lbs. Dwayne Sherad won the tournament. Dennis Muhlenforth was high hook with 7 tiles.

Cod - Fishing Report – May 4, 2009

We went to cod trip in New Hampshire for party boat. Weather was nice and it was good trip. I had my limit for cods and caught few haddock.

The highlight was, I had two biggest cods on the boat and there were 37 people. One was 43lbs and the other one was 39lbs. Both were on my stainless jig. Got 43lbs by 10 ½oz. with 8/0 siwash red color bucktail no teaser. For 39lb one, I used 7 ½ oz stainless jig with 7/0 siwash pink bucktail no teaser. Other fishes were 28 to 29lbs. It was very nice trip that everyone had their limit for big cods.

Black Sea Bass - Fishing Report – April 13, 2009

The sea condition was not too bad, but it was so cold and windy. Right after
very strong wind, first and second spots in the morning, it felt like some
fishes were there, but none of bites. About 5-6 people tried for Lucanus jigs and some others tried other kinds of jigs while rest people were bait fishing.
It was 23 people charter by Atlantic Star in Cape May, New Jersey. I, Chris, Kevin, and Marcin used all day jigging with Lucanus jig from Shimano. We had limit or close to limit while other people with other jigs were very slow. Chris and I won the pool, both were using Lucanus jig. Last few trips, almost every trip, I won the pool. I modified Lucanus jig using one more extra hook. 5 1/4 oz. and 7 oz. Lucanus jig, originally comes to 1/0 hook, but I used one 2/0 aki hook from Owner hook. It seems helping a lot, and after some more test, I will be adding extra hooks for Lucanus Jig orders!

Black Sea Bass & Tile Fish Combo - Fishing Report – March 31, 2009

After strong wind, the current was very rough. It was not easy to hold bottom. At first spot, about 320 feet down, it was so strong current. I was using 7oz. Lucanus Jig. I casted up stream and I could only hold bottom very short time. There were fishes but it was hard to catch due to the condition. After then, we moved to other spot where had better current. I tried 5 1/4oz. Lucanus but fish action wasn’t good. After hook and drop, for so many times, I caught 19 sea bass to 3 1/2lb and I won the pool, and for tile fish I caught 2 of 11-12 lb size. For whole day, I used Lucanus Jig. It’s really good jig, because sometimes a lot of dog fish in the water, but Lucanus lures only tile fish and sea bass. Soon, I will be trying it for cod fish.

Off-Shore Black Sea Bass - Fishing Report – March 19, 2009

Actually, the trip was scheduled for Tile & Sea bass combo trip, but due to the weather, so just did sea bass.

In the morning, the sea condition was a bit uncomfortable, but after 10am it became better.

Anyhow, it was good trip with 25 people. Almost everyone had their limit and good sizes.

And I was trying Lucanas Jig from Shimano for the first time and it was amazing. While others catching a lot of dog fish but none for me while catching good size sea bass. I really recommend these jigs, and will be on the website very soon.

It was so nice spring day and all day long non stop action. The condition was in 60 degrees, no wind, and no strong current. We went out with 27 people. About 290 blue line tile fish and every one limit out for Black sea bass. We fished about 320 feet deep. I jigged all day with 5 1/2 oz. Stainless jig with Gulp alive and squid strips.

I thought Tile Fish was not really good for the jigging, but I had 9 Tile fish and 25 sea bass by jigging. I tried yo-yo jigging and squidding. Either way worked for tile fish.
That was a rare day in a year with that kind beautiful weather and all day fish action.

Black Sea Bass - Fishing Report – Feb 16, 2009

We were planning to go for tile fish & sea bass combo trip, but when we saw the captain, he wanted to change to just sea bass, because of the weather condition.
The first spot, about 360 feet deep, there was good action for first two hours and caught few tile fish and a very unusually look fish. I’ve never seen something like it. It weighs about 8 lb, big eye, and dark red color. Anyone know what this is let me know that I’m very curious about this. (Including picture of the red fish with others)
Back to fishing report, few people got their limit for sea bass average about 20 sea bass.

Black Sea Bass - Fishing Report – Feb 6 & Feb 10, 2009

Charter to Atlantic Star, Wildwood, N.J.

Weather was so cold, but sea condition was good. Last few weeks, there were so many cold days that water temperature would be too cold, so fish action was too soft maybe. Anyhow, Bruce Matner had pool with 15 lb Cod Fish and he had his limit.

On Feb 10, I tried another trip to same boat as open boat with about 40 others. Weather was nice. For first hour, I caught 14 fishes and won the pool with 5 ½ lb fish by 5 1/2 oz. stainless steel jig with gulp alive. I heard some news from commercial fisherman that about 300-400 feet deep down in the water hold a lot of big sea bass.

Next trip will be tile fish and sea bass combo.

It will be either Feb 16 or 17. It depends by the weather.

Black Sea Bass - Fishing Report – Jan 30, 2009

We were fishing on same boat (Atlantic Star) in wild wood, New Jersey. It was warm and very calm day. Sometimes, when the weather is too good, fish action is little too soft. Some people did jigging all day. They had no problem for their limits. Like Kil Song, he had good day with a lot of big fish and few others. Pool winner was Young Park from Woodside, NY and second place was only 1-2 oz off. Around 10 fishes were almost the size. We were fishing same area with Doris Mae and Norstar and few other boats. After the trip, I heard from some of my customers from 5 people group fishing by Doris Mae and they only caught 3 fishes for 5 people. To catch more fishes, I believe jigging is the answer and good exercise for winter months.

Black Sea Bass - Fishing Report – Jan 22, 09

It was the first time to try our new Stainless Steel Jigs for sea bass. It was huge success. I caught 68 sea bass size of around 3 to 4 lbs, but as for limit I kept 25.

I used 7 & ½ oz. Stainless Steel jig with Gulp alive 3” shrimp, pearl white.

For first two hours, I caught about 30 sea basses using just Gulp bait. After that, I used squid and gulp bait. It was all day long non stop action. We saw few fishes over 6 ½ lb. but a lot of fishes were 3 to 4 lbs. I didn’t have any shorts.

Next plan for our sea bass charter trip will be on Thursday Jan 29, 2009.

First Sea Bass Charter Trip - 1/6/2009

On Jan 6, 2009, we went to Sea Bass Charter trip with Atlantic Star Fleet in Cape May, NJ. It was first trip for this winter and we had big success. We caught over 60 fishes weigh around 5 lb and Young Park won the pool with 7 lb 10 oz fish. It was great trip and better than last winter.

9/17/2008 - Fishing Report - Blue Fin Tuna

On Wednesday, September 17, 2008, we left Green Harbor, MA at 5 AM. The open sea was quiet with some spotted clouds in the sky – the conditions were perfect for tuna jigging. We cruised around and cast at a couple of spots but no luck, and oddly we did not see the usual whale or bird activity in the area.

In the early afternoon, we decided to settle at the east side corner of P. Town approximately 5 miles away from harbor. I tried all the jigs I had in my possession, and ended up using a 5 oz. dark brown braided jig and a size 3/0 4X strong Gamakatsu treble hook. I went to the front of the boat and cast the jig. It sank well past 150 feet and then abruptly something, possibly a tuna, came and tugged at the jig while it was sinking. I swung my rod backward hard and hooked the fish. Then, the fish shook its head violently and bolted down towards the sea floor. Judging by the force in which the fish swam away, I knew that it was an extremely large fish. After a couple of more head shakes the continuous strain on my 80lb line had reached its breaking point, making it snap and releasing my catch. In the end, the fish was victorious, breaking my line and taking away one of my favorite jigs, which was probably still stuck in its mouth.

I didn’t take this as a defeat. Looking through my tackle box I found a jig that I previously caught a 77” blue fin with on another trip, tied it to my line, and cast again. After about 20 minutes of casting my jig almost hit bottom, when, finally I hooked another big one. It took about 10 painstaking minutes to haul him up to the surface and drag it on board. It ended up being a blue fin tuna weighing an impressive 140lbs and measuring 55”.

At 5:40 AM we left dock, and we were looking for fish. We couldn’t find any until about 3 PM and we almost gave up. With all hope lost, I cast my jig below to about 140 feet. After about 2 minutes of jigging, something big was hooked. I fought over 3 hours with this one. After the first 50 minutes, I was able to bring it up to the surface but it was out of reach of our gaff. Then, it bolted down fast and hard down below about 40 to 50 feet. This continued for the next hour or so. We didn’t have a harpoon which made it so hard. If we had one, we could’ve ended this fight in less than an hour. But, when all is said and done, it is a beautiful fish that was worth every second of the fight.

Tuna Jigging

Hi! My name is Mike Jung. Let me briefly introduce myself before going into tips about catching tuna. I have been fishing and catching tuna over for twenty years, and I care about having more fun than catching bigger tuna. I and my crew are anglers not fishermen, so having fun fishing tuna is the most important element of fishing for us. It is much more fun to catch tuna jigging by bait fishing. Over the last twenty years, I caught roughly 1400 tuna all by jigging.

The Tunas I caught are about one dozen big eye tuna between 180~250 pounds, over 300 blue fin tuna (Many of them weighed over 200 pounds). Most of the tunas were caught fishing on party boats (head boats). I fish in the northeast region and some of boats I’ve been boarding are Helen H in Cape Cod, Super Hawk in Point Lookout Long Island, Big Jamaica in Brielle NJ, and Miss Barnegat Light in Barnegat Light NJ. When I go tuna fishing on one of boats I mentioned, I catch over ten tuna and sometimes over twenty tunas per trip. (Before the regulation went into effect. 3 yellow fin tuna per person.)

Few Things You Should Know For Tuna Jigging

Tuna jigging is about three to four times more effective than bait fishing.
Tuna jigging is a lot more fun than bait fishing, because the tuna jigging rod and reel are lighter than standard tuna equipment.
With the jigging tackle, when a fish is hooked that is less than 100 pounds. It is much easier to handle and quickly bring to gaff.
Some people may question why use light tackle for tuna. When a tuna hits a jig, I respond as quickly as possible to hook it, and then the tuna cannot escape since it cannot change its direction to elsewhere. After it is hooked, light tackle helps to make it very easy to feel how it is acting.
Another reason to use light tackle is when a tuna is hooked in its mouth, it is powerless than when hooked into its throat or deeper inside.
This is I feel why tuna jigging is much more effective and fun!

Fluke (Summer Flounder) Season for 2008 starts May 15 to Sept 1. Well, the size has increased to 20.5 inch and daily possession limited to 4. Fortunately, the state let us catch the flukes at least.

Squid Season For 2008 Started!

Squid Season for 2008 has started! About this time of the year is the beginning of Squid Season for the pacific. Once few squids caught, in two to three days, there would be immense schools of squids.
As the season started, until around late May, there would be good amount of squids caught, then the number and size of squid decrease to June. At this point, squids' spawning is done and would see very small squids, then in July, squids starts to move out of the shores.
Although there is one exception, in Provincetown, Massachusetts, you can catch big squids until late Summer and sometimes into Autumn.
